Silk and Debut

My two show heifers for this year are Silk and Debut.  Debut is a winter calf and was born on December 12, 2015.  Silk is a winter yearling and was born on December 1, 2014.  When we pick show calves, we look for these four things: feet and legs, rib, and pins and hooks.  Feet and legs are the cow’s feet and legs.  We look for straight long legs.  In feet we want their hooves pointed straight.  Rib is the calf’s depth of stomach.  Hooks and pins are near the rear end of the cow.  The pins are a hump that comes first and should go on a downward slant to the pins on the rear.  If you want to learn more, just ask.

  1. Do you practice judging other calves so you know what to look for? Did you select your two calves when they were very young, or did you wait for them to grow a bit before you decided they were good for showing? When did you start training them to walk with you and start grooming them for showing? Thank you for telling us so specifically how you know a strong calf for showing. I love learning from you!
